Final week

1.

A)I thought it was interesting how, eventhough he uses art as his medium, he does not call himself an artist. Instead, he calls himself a “Tactical Media Strategist”. He defies rules and disrupts conventions, hoping to expose insidious concentrations of social, political, and economic power. His work is thought provoking. Eventhough his work might cause turmoil, he has the guts to discuss sensitive issues and open people’s minds to new things.

B) Michelle Lopez’s goal to deflect media attention is very interesting. I wouldn’t think that any artist would want to be out of the spotlight. She does her work for herself and not for the approval of the public. She is cautious when talking to people about her work because she is afraid that they will change the meaning of her piece, and she doesnt want that. She believes that the media can make or break someones career, and that is very true.

C) Barney will never reach as high as he would like to go. This is because with each piece of work that he does, he puts so much effort into it and then he uses all of the effort as a sort of check point to his next goal. He tries a piece of work with a certain medium and he succeeds, which shows him that he can do more things with that medium, which opens up more possibilities of things he can do. So essentially, his work is never done! I like his thinking, though, because it tells us that we should never be fully satisfied with what we do, that every step we take opens up a new opportunity that we should explore.

2.I think that this class is mostly evaluated on the effort put into the projects. None of us are expected to come up with a masterpiece since we are not sculpture majors. Grades are also determined by the level of difficulty attempted by the sculptor. If someone does a project that is very simple and is well done, they might not get as high a grade as someone who was very ambitious but didn’t achieve as aesthetically pleasing of an effect because they didn’t put themselves out there and accept a challenge. I think that after taking this class, we will all walk away with a greater appreciation of certain artists and genres of art. We will also leave with a greater knowledge of how a sculptor thinks and I think we will appreciate seemingly simple works of a sculptor now because we now know how much time and effort and frustration they put into their work.
